Lesson:  The Ethics of Care

The ethic of care rests on the presupposition that human beings are caring beings. To care is the right thing to do.

Instructions:

  • Read the two reports on the burden of caring on the health workers brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic .
  • Watch the two YouTube videos on the Ethics of Care
  • Read the Course Notes on the Feminist Ethics of Care (PDF)
  • Answer the Guide Questions for Reflection.  Individual submission must be collated by the group leader and be submitted to me as a PDF (group output) via my email: jeane.peracullo@dlsu.edu.ph
  • Deadline is March 23, 2020 up to 12 MN.

An Ethical Dilemma for this extraordinary time:

Medical personnel in Brescia, Italy

Two weeks ago, Italy had 322 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. At that point, doctors in the country’s hospitals could lavish significant attention on each stricken patient.

One week ago, Italy had 2,502 cases of the virus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19. At that point, doctors in the country’s hospitals could still perform the most lifesaving functions by artificially ventilating patients who experienced acute breathing difficulties.

Today, Italy has 10,149 cases of the coronavirus. There are now simply too many patients for each one of them to receive adequate care. Doctors and nurses are unable to tend to everybody. They lack machines to ventilate all those gasping for air.

90% of primary caregivers in Wuhan are women. It is reasonable to infer that this is also true in the Philippines, especially in the nursing profession. Another grim reminder of the gendered aspect of our social vulnerabilities. Women suffer most because of their association with care and caregiving, which is undervalued professionally and regarded as unpaid work if done by women in the family.

What is Ethics of Care?

How is Ethics of Care different from other normative ethical principles?
